The invention relates to a method for diagnosing an onboard instrument of an aircraft piloted by a pilot and optionally a co-pilot, the onboard instrument receiving secondary signals from at least one sensor. According to the invention, the diagnosis method comprises the following steps: initiating (41) a recording of the secondary signals upon an instruction by the pilot or co-pilot when he detects a failure of the onboard instrument; recovering (42) the recorded signals without removing the onboard instrument; determining (43) from the recovered signals the presence or absence of a failure of the onboard instrument and, in the case of failure, diagnosing the failure of the onboard instrument. The invention can particularly be used for reducing the repair time and for identifying the core reason of the failure without removing the backup instrument.
