The system enables the provision of uncertainty data, showing an indication of the potential accuracy of the model. The method provides a model representative of a heterogeneous medium in 2D or 3D, described by several physical parameters, such as the impedances of the sub-soil relative to P-type and S-type waves, its density etc., using various seismic and geological data. Starting from an a priori model, one or more parameters are derived from known or estimated point values. The initial model is improved by minimising a global cost function representative on the one hand of the differences between the synthetic recordings translating the current model with the seismic recordings, and on the other hand representative of the differences between the current model and the a priori model. These differences are measured and information deduced which indicates the degree of uncertainty within the final model data.
