The invention relates to a doping method for the sintering of α-alumina, comprising the following steps: preparation of a powder suspension of α-alumina in a continuously stirred solvent; addition of an aluminium alkoxide solution, by way of a dopant, in an inert atmosphere; drying, in order to remove the solvent, until a dry powder is obtained, which powder is screened and calcined; attrition milling of the calcined, dried and screened powder; production of the green body using any of the existing techniques, preferably cold isostatic press forming; and furnace sintering of the resulting green body. The invention also relates to the use of polycrystalline α-alumina material to produce optical components or structural technical ceramics.
