The invention relates to a method for detecting a tear and/or for determining an elastic modulus (E) of a material web (2), particularly a fibrous material web in a machine for producing the same, between two fixed points (3.1, 3.2), the material web (2) being driven on the first of the fixed points (3.1) by means of a drive unit (5.1) at a target speed (v_ref(i)) and a dimension corresponding to the elastic modulus (E) of the material web (2) being determined. The invention is characterized in that a torque curve of an actual torque (M(i)) in the drive direction (5.1) is detected and evaluated in order to determine the dimension corresponding to the elastic modulus (E).
