Disclosed is a method for producing polydiallyl ammonium compounds that have terminal functional groups and a defined relative molar mass by radically polymerizing diallyl ammonium salts, optionally in the presence of one or more other radically polymerizable comonomers, selected diallyl ammonium salts comprising an aromatic annulated group, polydiallyl ammonium compounds produced according to the disclosed method, and the use of special functionalized thiols for producing polydiallyl ammonium compounds having terminal functional groups and a defined relative molar mass by radically polymerizing diallyl ammonium salts.
