Prediction of post-operative atrial fibrillation.The present invention relates to determining susceptibility to post-operative cardiac arrhythmia such as atrial fibrillation in a human patient following cardiac surgery relying on determining levels of metabolites in a cardiac tissue sample taken from the patient during surgery, e.g. an atrial tissue sample arising from atrium cannulation. The metabolites of interest include metabolites of both glycolytic and lipid metabolism, for example, the glucose to acetate ratio and the ratio of alanine and lactate to acetate have been found to be informative.
