The present invention provides a method for preparing a metal oxide catalyst material comprising oxides of molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), tellurium (Te) and niobium (Nb), said process comprising the steps of (i) subjecting a catalyst precursor mixture comprising molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), Tellurium (Te) and niobium (Nb) to a calcination treatment in an oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature of 150 to 400°C to prepare a calcined catalyst material and (ii) subjecting the calcined catalyst material to a treatment at a pressure of at least 10MPa and a temperature of at least 400°C in the presence of an inert fluid phase to prepare a catalyst material comprising oxides of molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), Tellurium (Te) and niobium (Nb). This method results in catalyst materials having very high contents of crystallographic Ml phase and excellent propane conversion, rates and selectivities for acrylic acid in the oxidation of propane.
