The invention relates to tungsten electrodes for high pressure discharge lamps, which electrodes contain thorium oxide, the weight percentage of the thorium oxide in the material of the tungsten electrode (11, 12) ranging from 0.3% by weight to 0.5% by weight and the tungsten electrodes (11, 12) additionally containing potassium having a weight percentage ranging from 0.003% by weight to 0.009% by weight. The invention further relates to a high pressure discharge lamp comprising said electrodes.
