Disclosed are: a detection method, a detecting agent, and a kit for the detection, each of which can determine the occurrence of liver cancer conveniently at a high probability without using any contrast medium; and a therapeutic and prophylactic agent for liver cancer, which comprises, as an active ingredient, a substance obtained by the evaluation and selection among candidate substances for the treatment and prevention of liver cancer. Specifically disclosed are: a liver cancer detection method, a liver cancer-detecting agent, and a liver cancer detection kit, each of which utilizes the expression level of at least one gene selected from the group consisting of AKR1B10 gene, HCAP-G gene and TPX2 gene (which are genes expressed specifically in a liver cancer cell) and the expression level of an expression product of the gene as measures; a method for evaluating/selecting a substance capable of reducing the above-mentioned expression level; and a composition for the treatment and prevention of liver cancer, which comprises the above-mentioned substance as an active ingredient.
