This invention relates to the marker assisted identification or selection of mammalian subjects with normal or abnormal insulin metabolism or regulation and/or predisposition to or protection from diseases and conditions in which insulin regulation and metabolism are involved, particularly by assaying for increased or decreased SCARB1 expression or activity or for expression of or the presence of polymorphisms in the SCARB1 gene. The invention also relates to methods to identify compounds able to modulate SCARB1 gene or gene product activity or expression.
