Compositions for maintaining, strengthening, improving, or promoting eye health comprise α-lipoic acid, antioxidant phenolic compounds,vitamin C, vitamin E, thiamine, nicotinamide, pyridoxine, and chromium. The compositions are useful to prevent, stabilize, reverse and/or treat visual acuity loss in subjects having, or being at risk of developing, an ocular disease. The antioxidant phenolic compounds may be from red-wine extracts. The compositions can further comprise one or more other antioxidants, beneficial minerals, and/or nutritional or dietary materials.
