The method involves providing an enlarged piston ring volume (17) with a piston upper section (3) and a piston shaft. A piston head (4) of the piston upper section is descended into a fire land (5) at a peripheral side. A ring field (6) for receiving piston rings (9a-9c) is attached to the fire land. The piston rings are positioned at a distance from ring lands (8a, 8b) in the fire land. Thermal highly stressed zones of an outer profile (18) of a piston (1) of targeted expansion space are introduced in an area for local magnification of the annular piston ring volume. An independent claim is also included for a piston comprising a cut.
