Production of an erosion protection layer on a metallic substrate comprises welding a steel material containing at least 0.1 % carbon and at least 12 % chromium to a metallic substrate by laser welding. An independent claim is also included for a component, preferably a compressor or turbine blade, having a metallic substrate with an erosion protection layer.
