The engine has a cylinder (10) with a cylinder body (12), a cylinder head (38), and a piston (14) carrying a housing in which a pin (22) is erected. A combustion chamber (40) is defined by chamber walls that are constituted by a surface portion (42) of the cylinder head relative to the piston, an inner peripheral surface (44) of the cylinder, an upper face (20) of the piston and housing walls (24-36, 62). A part of the housing walls is constituted by a material with thermal characteristics different from that of a material of other housing walls. An independent claim is also included for a method for forming a fuel-air mixture for a self-ignition type internal combustion engine.
