Header for a code reading device for reading an optical code field and method for reading an optical code field

The header (1) has a light source (21) i.e. LED, for irradiating objects (70) and an evaluating unit with an evaluation optic (24) for reading an optical code field (71) in the objects. A connecting unit (60) produces an aligned connection with a code reader (2). A switching device (10) is arranged and positioned, such that the light is switched and comes out from the light source of the code reader during the connection of the code reader and retraces for evaluating the transmission of the light of the code reader to the evaluation optic of the connected code reader. An independent claim is also included for a method for reading an optical code field on a transparent wall of an object using a code reader with a header.
