An apparatus and a method for overlaying an image in a video presenting system at which an embedded operating system is mounted are provided to output two images after overlaying the images by realizing an overlay function at a final output end without using an internal processor of a CPU. A real image unit(100) includes the followings. A VGA(Video Graphic Array) engine(107) signal-processes a first image or second image, which is selected as an main image, in a signal which enables the display of the second image, and outputs the selected first and second images on the main image after overlaying those two images by signal-processing the first and second images according to overlay information. A microcomputer(109) communicates with an embedded unit(200) periodically to the second image and the overlay information from the embedded unit to the VGA engine, and controls the signal-processing of the VGA engine according the selected main image and sub image.
