An apparatus for recognizing a fingerprint by distinguishing a bio-fingerprint and a method therefor are provided to discriminate the bio-fingerprint and a forged fingerprint by sensing the change in the capacitance between a transparent electrode and the ground through a fingerprint on a fingerprint input window where the transparent electrode is formed. A fingerprint input unit(110) comprises a fingerprint sensor to obtain the image of a fingerprint contacted on a fingerprint input window of the fingerprint sensor, and then output the fingerprint image to a fingerprint authentication unit(150). At least one transparent electrode(120) is installed in the fingerprint input window of the fingerprint input unit. A living body recognizing unit(130) detects the change of capacitance by a fingerprint contacted on the transparent electrode to determine whether the contacted fingerprint is a bio-fingerprint or forged fingerprint.
