A system and a method for context-based hierarchical adaptive round robin scheduling are provided to transmit data among plural microprocessors efficiently by increasing a data transmission speed based on adaptive, weighted, hierarchical scheduling techniques. A first processor(102) is a system processor such as a central processing unit which is used to help control the operation of the device by processing computer instructions and other data. The first processor includes a memory 108. In some embodiments, the memory 108 may be an on board memory cache, or it may be some other type of memory which is able to store data to be processed by the processor. A second processor(104) takes various forms. In one embodiment, the second processor is a specialized processor which performs more limited duties than a central processing unit. The second processor is associated with a more peripheral function such as processing multimedia data, such as with a video card, a graphics card, or the like. The second processor also takes the form of a smartcard or some other secondary processor in a set top box. Between the first processor and the second processor is a data path(105). The data path is a physical connection which allows data to be transmitted from the first processor to the second processor.
