A digital image processing apparatus having an automatic backlight detection function is provided to calculate the range of an incident angle of the sun and a backlight area based on location information, time information, and direction information received to a GPS receiver and an electron compass and determine backlight, thereby reducing conspicuously failure and an error caused by the manual determination of backlight. A unit(192) for deriving the incident angle of the sun derives the incident angle of the sun from the location information and time information of a digital image processing apparatus. A backlight area calculation unit(193) calculates the range of a backlight area from the direction information of the digital image processing apparatus. A backlight determination unit(194) determines whether the photographic direction of the digital image processing apparatus is backlight or not from the incident angle of the sun and the range of the backlight area.
