A gateway selection method in a wireless mesh network is provided to construct a routing tree, and to search a gateway which is the most suitable for a wireless mesh network environment given with a minimal overhead regardless of network size. A spanning routing tree is built for a given network(501-509). Reference factors for overall network capacities are calculated for all routers which constitute the network(511-515). A router having a maximum value among the calculated reference factors is selected(517,519). The reference factors are calculated based on link capacities for each link of routing paths turning towards all of the routers from a random router and hop counts of the routing paths turning towards all of the routers from the random router in the given network.
