A menu selecting method in an IPTV based service and a set top box for an IPTV are provided to enable a user to immediately select a desired menu item and simplify a key operation. By outputting menu output data including number identification information by each menu item, a menu screen is displayed(S110). After displaying the menu screen, it is checked whether key input is generated from a user(S120). It is determined whether the key input is an identification information key allocated in the menu screen or not(S130). If so, a specific menu item corresponding to the inputted identification information key is selected on a primary route of the menu screen(S132). If not so, it is determined whether the key input is the other information form or not(S140,S150).
