Preprocessing apparatus and method for illumination-invariant face recognition

A face recognition preprocessing apparatus, a method thereof, and a face recognition system using the same are provided to remove noise by illumination variation, thereby improving a recognition rate. A histogram equalizer(11) converts a histogram of an input image into an equal distribution. A gamma compensator(12) relieves non-uniform illumination conditions of the image histogram-equalized by the histogram equalizer. A Wiener filter(13) removes noise of the image gamma-compensated by the gamma compensator. An LoG(Laplacian of Gaussian) filter(14) extracts face features of the image from which the noise is removed by the Wiener filter. A contrast compensator(15) improves a contrast of the face features extracted by the LoG filter.
