[PROBLEMS] To provide a liquid crystal composition, which can satisfactorily reduce light scattering in a focal conic state, and a liquid crystal display element having an improved color balance and an improved contrast and an electronic paper using the same. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] The content of a chiral material in a cholesteric liquid crystal LCg for G is rendered higher than the content of the chiral material in a cholesteric liquid crystal LCb for B. The content of a chiral material in a cholesteric liquid crystal LCr for R is rendered higher than the content of the chiral material in a cholesteric liquid crystal LCg for G. The chiral material in the cholesteric liquid crystal LCr for R comprises about 5% by weight of a chiral material CHl1 as an L material mixed into a base liquid crystal as an R material. The base liquid crystal comprises a nematic liquid crystal LCn and 27% by weight of a liquid crystalline chiral material CHr1 as an R material and 3% by weight of a noncrystalline chiral material CHr2 as an R material incorporated into the nematic liquid crystal LCn.
