PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for detecting a target position in active sonar based on fast approximate fourier transform are provided to reduce operation quantity while minimizing degradation of ability.;CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for detecting a target position includes a beam forming part(120), a quantization part(132), a frequency information operation part(134), and an extracting part(140). If a reflection signal is received from a target, the beam forming part generates a beam signal according to each azimuth from the received reflection signal. The quantization part makes quantization according to a size of the generated beam signal different. The frequency information operation part maps a fourier operator in a time domain of the beam signal, and extracts frequency information by adding the mapped value. The extracting part extracts a signal more than a specific critical value among the extracted frequency information, and detects a target position.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2010
