A method of reducing the level of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide in an individual, comprising administering to the individual at least one polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) or its precursor or source to reduce the level of Aβ-peptide in an individual, where the PUFA is selected from the group consisting of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); docosapentaenoic acid (DPAn-6); combinations of DHA and DPAn-6; combinations of DHA and arachidonic acid (ARA); and combinations of DHA, DPAn-6 and ARA. ! 2. The method according to claim 1, where the Aβ peptide is a soluble Aβ peptide. ! 3. A method of lowering a tau protein level in an individual, comprising administering to the individual at least one polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) or its precursor or source to lower the tau protein level in an individual, wherein the PUFA is selected from the group consisting of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); docosapentaenoic acid (DPAn-6); combinations of DHA and DPAn-6; combinations of DHA and arachidonic acid (ARA); and combinations of DHA, DPAn-6 and ARA. ! 4. The method according to claim 3, where the tau protein is a phosphorylated tau protein. ! 5. A method of reducing the level of presenilin-1 protein (PS1) in an individual, comprising administering to the individual at least one polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) or its precursor or source to lower the level of PS1 protein in an individual, where the PUFA is selected from the group consisting of from docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); docosapentaenoic acid (DPAn-6); combinations of DHA and DPAn-6; combinations of DHA and arachidonic acid (ARA); and combinations of DHA, DPAn-6 and ARA. ! 6. A method of delaying the onset of synaptic dysfunction or reducing the severity of synaptic dysfunction in an individual, comprising administering to the individual DPAn-6 or a combination of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) or their precursors or
