The device (11) has a mobile load carrier (15) in which loads e.g. lamps, are arranged. Traction units (17) e.g. traction ropes, are provided for connecting the mobile load carrier with a stationary drive carrier (13). The traction units allow lowering of the load carrier from an operating position to a service position and vice versa. An electric motor (21) actuates the traction units, and is arranged at the drive carrier. Guiding units (47, 49, 51, 53) are provided at the load carrier and the drive carrier, cooperate with each other and are arranged in a distance from each other. An independent claim is also included for a method for motor-driven lifting and lowering of loads i.e. hanger lights.
