A portable inhaler, especially for supplying controlled does of nicotine, or any other material, has a battery powered micro plate heater onto which the material is dosed via a capillary feed. The dosing process is initiated by the user sucking a mouthpiece to activate a piston dosing process. The heated material is converted into a gas or aerosol spray in an expansion chamber before entering the mouthpiece. The micro plate heater operates about 270 deg.C and the batteries can be rechargeable. The operation of the inhaler can be monitored by integral LEDs.
