The device (1) has a stretching element (4) i.e. roller, contacting with a clothing (3) of a paper machine without utilizing a movable plate shaped pressure element (8) that is designed as a suction device, where the stretching element moves with the speed of the clothing. An actuated contact is provided between another stretching element i.e. roller, and the clothing based on a pressing force of the latter stretching element on the clothing, where the pressing force is produced and/or increased by a wave-like guide of the clothing. An independent claim is also included for a method for starting or restarting operation of a paper machine.
