The device has a nitrogen producing device (13) for producing increased nitrogen content in the atmosphere of a container (1). A compressed air conditioning device compresses and dries the surrounding air, which is supplied from outside of the container. The air conditioned in such a manner is guided into the container over the nitrogen producing device. The compressed air conditioning device has a compressor (2) e.g. flow compressor, and a drying device. An exhaust gas turbocharger of a motor vehicle engine is used as the compressor. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing and maintaining an artificial atmosphere in a storage container or a transport container.
