The method involves detecting a front edge (21) of a running workpiece (12) e.g. floor panel, by a sensor (6) that is arranged in an infeed (5) of a printing machine (1). A rotation angle of a gravure roll (10) and an applicator roll (11) is synchronized up to a position of contacts of the applicator roll with the front edge. The synchronization is performed by positive or negative acceleration of the gravure roll and the applicator roll. A transport speed of a conveyor belt (2) is maintained to be constant.
