The device has a gear shift rail (2) with shift-forks (3, 4) that are slidable relative to the rail. The shift-forks are positioned by a detent (5) at preset positions on the rail. The rail and/or the shift-forks and/or a gear case (1) have a groove, in which a detent spring is arranged. The detent spring has a spring ring whose radial outer surface has a rounded form. The ring includes two guide lugs that are arranged at a side of a ring gap of the ring. The rail is guided in the gear case that includes a detent recess (6), in which the spring is engaged.
