The machine has a clamping device (8) for clamping a work piece (5) in a processing table (6) by axial movement of a retaining device (4), which accommodates the work piece. A coupling unit is arranged between the retaining device and a measuring spindle (1) and is held in a position by force of a spring (19), where the retaining device is strongly connected with the spindle in the position. The coupling unit is moved to another position by overcoming the spring force by axial movement of the retaining device, which is elastically supported at the spindle in the latter position.
