The method involves receiving a warning message (MES), where the warning message of the warning message sending vehicle is received (S2) by the communication unit of the security system in the receiving vehicle. A position (POS) of the sending vehicle and a reason (REAS) for the warning message are determined (S3) from the warning message. The relevance of the warning message for the receiving vehicle, is checked according to the the received message and depending on a given electronic horizon (EL-HOR ).
