Refining oil-containing sands or shale, heats, cracks vapors and draws-off vaporized product stream, burns heavy hydrocarbons left in residual solids and recycles hot coke to cracker

The solids (1) are heated in a reactor (6) to 300-1000[deg] C, to drive off an oil-containing vapor, which is sent to a cracker (9). There, heavy oil components are cracked. Products held in the cracker are separated and the product vapor stream is drawn off. Solids from the reactor, together with the non-vaporized fraction, are sent to a furnace (12). Here, residual heavy hydrocarbons are burned-off at 1050-1200[deg] C. Hot solids from the furnace are recycled (15) into the reactor, whilst excluding the oxidizing atmosphere of the furnace.
