The mold body made of silicon carbide containing porous carbon produced by sol-gel-process out of an organic precursors useful for the production of casting molds for mold casting of metal or metal alloy, comprises a solid phase having 3-50% of silicon carbide. The volume portion of the pore is 60-95%. The specific surface (determined by nitrogen sorption at 77K) is more than 50 m 2/g and the micropore volume is less than 0.02 cm 3/g. The material exists as granulate or powder. An independent claim is included for a procedure for the production of mold body out of silicon carbide containing porous carbon.
