The method involves clamping a tubular hollow profile (5) into a tool, where the tool comprises two clamping mechanisms (8, 9) and a profiling section (10) between the clamping mechanisms, which are arranged at a distance. The profile is partially heated at a region of the profiling section. The profile is axially compressed for enlarging or axial pulling of the profile for reducing wall thickness within the region of the profiling section by movement of the mechanisms parallel to an axle of the profile. The mechanisms are opened, and the hollow section is extracted from the tool. An independent claim is also included for a device for producing a tubular hollow profile with a wall thickness varying in an axial direction.
