The method involves controlling a leading electrical pump pressure circuit by outer and inner pump electrodes (APE, IPE) such that reference-Nernst voltage lies between a reference electrode (RE) and a Nernst electrode (NE). The reference-Nernst voltage is adjusted to a preset value greater or smaller than a reference voltage, preferably 450 milli Volts. Pump voltage is reduced or increased over a preset time period so that oxygen is pumped into or from a measuring hollow cavity (MH).
