The device has a spring element stretchable by a pair of traction mechanisms (44) and a headrest (14) that is moved upwardly by using a spring action of the spring element. A locking device (50) is provided for fixing the headrest in driven position. The spring element is stretchable by the traction mechanisms when the headrest remains in fixed driven position. The headrest is lowerable when stretching the spring element by the traction mechanisms. The traction mechanisms are operated by a common driving device (46).
