A light for illuminating surfaces has an LED light source (5) to generate a conical beam (17) which is coupled into a light guide (3) via a shaped interface (11) to spread the light evenly and to generate an even illumination effect on the output face (2) of the light guide. The shaped interface is parabolic in a plane normal to the light guide output and hyperbolic in a plane parallel to the light guide output plane.
