The method involves defining a characteristics dataset (1), which completely describes an individual motor vehicle and includes component characteristics and attribute characteristics of components of the vehicle. Characteristics variants of an explanation module are produced for the components, and the variants are assigned to the attribute characteristics. The module is defined and accessed based on the attribute characteristics, such that the module is not selected based on the component characteristics, and only the variants assigned to the vehicle are accessed by the dataset. An independent claim is also included for a system for preparing an operating manual of an individual motor vehicle.
