The method involves arranging a nitrogen oxide storage catalytic converter (7) and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalytic converter (9) in partial gas strands arranged in different cylinder groups (3, 4) such that a exhaust gas hypostoichiometric composition is provided in the nitrogen oxide storage catalytic converter for desulfating and a preset amount of released sulphur compound together with a exhaust gas stream having an exhaust gas mixture flows to the SCR catalytic converter. Hydrogen sulfide present in the sulphur compound is oxidized in the SCR catalytic converter. An independent claim is also included for a device for cleaning exhaust gas for an internal combustion engine.
