Catalyst carrier preferably useful in the synthesis of vinyl acetate monomer, comprises an open-porous matrix, which is formed from a material containing natural silicate layer, preferably from an acid-treated calcinated bentonite containing material, where elementary carbon is distributed in the matrix. Independent claims are included for the preparations of the catalyst carrier comprising either mixing the powder form natural silicate layer, preferably acid treated calcinated or non-calcinated bentonite with powder form graphite or a graphitizable material; forming a body from the obtained mixture or applying the obtained mixture on the carrier structure; calcinating the mixture, when the mixture contains the natural silicate layer and graphite; and graphitizing the graphitizable material contained in the mixture, when the mixture contains the natural silicate layer and the graphitizable material; or providing the natural silicate layer, preferably acid treated calcinated or non-calcinated bentonite, incorporating a carbonizable chemical compound between the silicate layers; and carbonizing the chemical compound.
