The device has a heat transfer element that is assigned with hot ends, where a heat transfer medium e.g. water, takes away heat from exhaust gas over the hot ends, conveys the heat to a cold region of the heat transfer element from a exhaust gas system, and delivers the heat to engine and/or gear oil of an internal combustion engine over the cold region. The heat transfer element is designed as a heat pipe. The heat transfer element with its hot ends is arranged within an exhaust gas system downstream to a catalyst. The oil in an oil reservoir is heated by the transfer of heat.
