The method involves driving a honing tool (1) in such a position in a bore of the work piece that one group of honing stone retainers (10) is located in the bore and the other group of honing stone retainers (20) is located outside the bore. The honing tool performs the honing operation by simultaneous rotational and reciprocating motion of the honing tool and after that the honing tool is moved in the axial direction. An independent claim is included for a honing tool for honing the inner surface of a drilling.
