The method involves operating a piston in an operating range using homogeneous self-ignition. A closing flank (28) of a movable charge-cycle valve, is varied for the transition of the self-ignition mode to an extraneous-ignition mode such that energy conversion value characterizing the measure of energy conversion in a combustion chamber is reached during adjustment of the flank in an early direction and/or late direction at a relatively later time during a combustion process. The flank is adjusted into a middle region between early and late time at a relatively early time.
