The method involves determining the torque required by the driver from a linkage of the driver pedal position and clutch pedal position information for an electrical starting and for a mixed startup. The torque required by the driver corresponds to the desired starting torque of the engaged drive unit. The desired starting torque of the engaged drive unit is determined from the minimum of the desired drive torque corresponding to the accelerator pedal and the clutch transmission power corresponding to the clutch pedal travel.
