The transport unit (36) has holders (37, 39) for clamping-frames (33) swinging about elevated axes (A1, A2). This allows each clamping frame to be transferred between the loading position and the presentation position where processing, e.g. welding operations, take place. Two holders are associated with each presentation position. These can be swung in alternation into the presentation position. Two presentation positions are allocated to the holder, allowing it to be swung from the loading position to either of them. The presentation position is parallel to and at the side of a transfer line (16). The presentation position is arranged at the processing station, such that a loaded clamping frame can be supplied to a processing position by an automated process unit (11). Several loading regions (7, 8, 9, 10) are located adjacently, on one side of the transfer line, or on either side of it. The processing station (5) is formed by a load-bearing frame (20) comprising columns (23) at corners of a rectangular surface. In a production module of the plant, a clamping frame can be fastened in a defined position by clamps, between two columns. The automated process unit is a robot with articulating arms. In addition to transport, it is designed for the welding-on of components and for geometric welding of the assembly. It is a portal robot. A separate clamping frame (33) is provided for the welded-on components. The transfer line (16) has a transport system, especially for platforms (17), 21) carrying base components of the assembly. The platforms are moved into and out from the frame arrangement (20). The transport system can be lowered in this region, so that a base platform moved by it, can be fixed and centered on a lifting device. The automated processing units (11, 11') can be moved in the processing station, parallel to the transport system. The loading station (7-10) is designed as a manual working zone.
