The method involves pressing an area of a transfer layer of a transfer foil (22) forming a motive by an embossing die (4) against a surface of a workpiece (21) that is decorated, where an embossing wheel (41) is used as the embossing die. A projecting area of the die body forming a die surface is made of a silicone material in the embossing wheel. The embossing wheel is unrolled under intermediate wedging of the transfer foil on the surface of the workpiece. The embossing wheel is pressed against the workpiece by a control device (5) by dynamically regulating the embossing force. An independent claim is also included for a device for decorating a surface of a workpiece.
