The method involves guiding a fluid i.e. exhaust gas, in respective fluid lines (44, 46) based on two positions of a bypass valve (42), where flow characteristics of the fluid line (44) differ from flow characteristics of the fluid line (46). Values of parameters characterizing a fluid flow such as flow resistance, are determined in the two positions of the bypass valve. A difference between the determined values is calculated, and the bypass valve is closed based on the calculated difference. An independent claim is also included for a computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
