The method involves detecting acoustic signals of a motor vehicle by a microphone, and preprocessing the detected acoustic signals by filtering the signals at a limited frequency range. The preprocessed signals are analyzed for determining characteristics of the signals. The characteristics of the signals are classified into classes. The classes are compared with a reference classification. Additional data of an acceleration sensor and/or other vehicle status data are detected. An independent claim is also included for a device for evaluating acoustic behavior of a motor vehicle.
